چکیده

We study how a gift exchange labor market reacts to the occurrence of negative shocks. One-round shocks may hit either workers’ wages or employers’ earnings (via worker productivity). In our model, other-regarding preferences suffice predict and above competitive level. Wage rigidity is predicted if we add wage illusion loss aversion. Using real-effort laboratory experiment, find support for model. When there are no shocks, exchange. After shock see strong nominal impact on effort, as predicted. Rigidity also observed after productivity shock, but here do observe increases in especially at low wages. The latter contrary model predictions suggests that alter gift-exchange patterns. conclude often field can be explained by boundedly rational workers with social preferences.

Gift Exchange versus Monetary Exchange : Theory and

We study the Lagos and Wright (2005) model of monetary exchange in the laboratory. With a finite population of sufficiently patient agents, this model has a unique monetary equilibrium and a continuum of non-monetary gift exchange equilibria, some of which Pareto dominate the monetary equilibrium. We find that subjects avoid the gift-exchange equilibria in favor of the monetary equilibrium. We ...

Gift Exchange versus Monetary Exchange: Experimental Evidence

This paper reports findings from an experiment that implements the Lagos-Wright (2005) model of monetary exchange. We find that subjects generally avoid the autarkic equilibrium of that model and make trading decisions consistent with the model’s monetary equilibrium. Aliprantis, Camera and Puzzello (ACP, 2007) show that providing periodic access to centralized markets as in the Lagos and Wrigh...

Gift Exchange in the Field

This study reports evidence from a field experiment that was conducted to investigate the relevance of gift-exchange in a natural setting. In collaboration with a charitable organization we sent roughly 10,000 solicitation letters to potential donors. One third of the letters contained no gift, one third contained a small gift and one third contained a large gift. The treatment assignment was r...

Obligations within a community require that individuals are required to gi...

Gift Exchange in the Workplace

We develop a model of manager-employee relationships where employees care more for their manager when they are more convinced that their manager cares for them. Managers can signal their altruistic feelings towards their employees in two ways: by offering a generous wage and by giving attention. Contrary to the traditional gift-exchange hypothesis, we show that altruistic managers may offer low...
